This course is a perfect next step for those who confidently paddle Class II rivers and would like to continue working on their progression of skills. The Upper Green is a beautiful river offering exciting Class II-III+ rapids in a pristine setting. The constant flow of water through this narrow gorge creates an almost tropical feel. A river with enormous trees and lush vegetation is an inspiring place to paddle. In addition to the aesthetic beauty, the Upper Green River is an ideal place to beat the crowds found on other regional rivers.
The Green River is dam controlled. In the summer, the release time is frequently early morning to early afternoon. Due to the location of the Upper stretch of river, this clinic begins and ends earlier relative to the dam release (approx. 7am-4pm).
On the Upper Green, we can work on skills used for running class II-III rivers in more detail. This includes river running strategy, bank and boat scouting, understanding hydraulics, and river hazards. The river is swifter and the rapids more challenging than the rivers we run on our “Introduction to Whitewater Kayaking” and “Beyond the Basics” courses, offering opportunities for more advanced practice. Two rapids, “Bayless’ Boof” and “Pinball”, offer a more significant challenge (Class III+) compared to the rest of the run. Both can be portaged if you aren’t quite ready for the challenge. However, if you found those two rapids rewarding, you can run them again by carrying your boat back up to the top.
You will enjoy the scenic beauty of this river, but as with many pristine places – the access to the river requires a bit of effort to reach. It is a gradual uphill hike for .6 of a mile from the take-out to our vehicles. To get out of the river gorge you must be willing to hike uphill carrying or pulling your boat. But for those who love to reach out-of-the-way places and the beauty they hold, it is well worth it! We have clients who return several times in a summer just to run the Upper Green River.
Clients must provide their own transportation to and from the river.
