1. Know What the Big Bradley Experience Includes
Big Bradley is a high-adventure wilderness experience that requires active participation.
The trip begins with a hike toward the waterfall. Participants hike approximately 0.8 miles to the top of the falls, where guides introduce the harness and rappel equipment and teach the required technique.
Before attempting the main descent, you practice on a 30-foot vertical rock face. Once the group is comfortable using the rappel equipment, the experience progresses to the approximately 200-foot waterfall rappel.
Across the full trip, expect:
- About two miles of hiking
- Wilderness terrain
- Wet and slippery surfaces
- Harness and equipment instruction
- Rappelling practice
- Multiple climbs on the practice wall
- An approximately 200-foot waterfall descent
- About four hours of total activity
Water and a light snack are provided during the trip.
Big Bradley is better suited to people looking for a physically active challenge than those wanting a casual sightseeing experience.
2. Check the Age, Weight, and Physical Requirements
Big Bradley currently requires participants to be:
- At least 15 years old
- Between 90 and 275 pounds
Green River Adventures recommends the trip for active, adventurous individuals looking for a rewarding challenge and experienced rappellers.
Participants are required to climb the 30-foot practice wall multiple times with assistance from the rope. The experience also involves wilderness hiking, wet surfaces, and several hours of physical activity.
Before booking, consider whether you are comfortable with:
- Significant height
- Around two miles of hiking
- Wet and uneven terrain
- Repeated climbing practice
- Rappelling equipment
- Several hours of outdoor activity
Green River Adventures notes that Big Bradley may not be appropriate for some older adults or people with health conditions that could require immediate attention.
If you have a medical concern that could affect your participation, contact the Green River Adventures team before booking.
3. Big Bradley or Little Bradley: Which Should You Choose?

If you are interested in waterfall rappelling but unsure whether Big Bradley matches your experience level, compare it with the Little Bradley Waterfall Rappel before booking.
Big Bradley Waterfall Rappel
- Approximately 200-foot waterfall rappel
- Ages 15+
- Weight range: 90–275 pounds
- About four hours
- About two miles of hiking
- Some rappelling experience recommended
- Intended for active adventurers and experienced rappellers
Little Bradley Waterfall Rappel
- Approximately 100-foot waterfall rappel
- Ages 12+
- Weight range: 70–275 pounds
- About four hours
- About two miles of hiking
- No previous rappelling experience required
- Recommended for first-time rappellers and active adventurers
If this would be your first rappel, Little Bradley provides the more appropriate progression because no previous rappelling experience is required.
The right choice depends on your experience, physical ability, and comfort with height—not simply which waterfall has the larger drop.
4. You Practice Before the 200-Foot Rappel
You do not begin the experience on the 200-foot waterfall. At the top of the approach, guides introduce the harness and gear and teach the techniques used to rappel safely.
You then practice on a 30-foot vertical rock face. Participants are required to climb this wall multiple times with rope assistance, giving them repeated opportunities to understand the equipment and movement before proceeding to Big Bradley.
This practice does not make the main descent easy. The 200-foot rappel is still a significant challenge.
It does mean that you learn how the equipment works before reaching the main waterfall.
5. Closed-Toe Shoes Are Required
Footwear is not optional advice for this trip. All guests participating in Green River Adventures’ guided hikes and rappels are required to wear closed-toe shoes appropriate for the activity. Shoes are available to rent at check-in.
Because the terrain includes slippery rock, Green River Adventures specifically recommends closed-toe amphibious footwear with sticky-rubber tread. Canyoneering shoes are currently available to rent for $10. You should also expect to get wet.
Green River Adventures supplies:
- Long-sleeve neoprene tops
- Nylon splash pants
For your own preparation:
- Wear long pants for the rappel.
- Apply sunscreen before the trip.
- Use a retainer for sunglasses.
- Wear clothing suitable for getting wet.
- Leave unnecessary valuables secured before departing.
Green River Adventures recommends using your vehicle as a locker for phones, wallets, and other valuables and leaving your keys at the front desk.
Review the Big Bradley Waterfall Rappel trip details before arrival for the latest footwear, clothing, and equipment requirements.
6. Plan for Four Hours and Arrive Early
The Big Bradley Waterfall Rappel covers approximately two miles of hiking and four hours of total trip time.
The experience generally progresses through:
- Wilderness approach
- Harness and equipment orientation
- Rappelling instruction
- Practice on the 30-foot wall
- Approximately 200-foot Big Bradley rappel
- Return from the trip
Changing rooms are available at the Green River Adventures outpost afterward.
Arrive 15 Minutes Before Your Trip
Green River Adventures expects guests to arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled trip time for check-in, orientation, and changing.
This is an operating requirement rather than simply a suggested arrival time. If you arrive late, Green River Adventures will try to place you on another same-day trip when availability allows. However, late arrivals are not eligible for refunds.
Parking in Saluda can also be tight. Green River Adventures has limited parking, with long-term public parking available nearby. Give yourself enough time to park and check in before the group departs.
7. Every Participant Must Complete a Waiver
Each person participating in the adventure must complete a Participant Agreement Form.
Green River Adventures’ current policy requires:
- Every guest signs a waiver.
- A parent or guardian to also sign for participants under 18.
- Any required paperwork for an unaccompanied minor to be completed before arrival and brought to check-in.
Do not leave participant paperwork until the departure time.
If someone in your group carries an EpiPen or other fast-acting medication, tell your guide. Green River Adventures states that guides can carry it in a dry bag during the trip.
8. Check the Exact Schedule and Price Before Booking
Big Bradley currently costs $129 for guests aged 15 and older.
Reservations are required.
The standard Big Bradley schedule is currently:
- Monday — 8 a.m.
- Wednesday — 8 a.m.
- Friday — 8 a.m.
- Saturday — 8 a.m.
Green River Adventures states that other dates or times may sometimes be available by phone when the regular booking calendar does not show an option that works for your group.
Because pricing and availability can change, check the current Big Bradley Waterfall Rappel schedule and booking details before planning your day.
9. Understand the Cancellation and Weather Rules
Reservations are charged in full at the time of booking. If you need to cancel or modify a reservation, Green River Adventures requires at least 72 hours, or three days, notice before the scheduled trip.
Once you are inside the 72-hour window:
- The reservation is considered final.
- Cancellations are not eligible for refunds.
- The reservation is not eligible for rescheduling.
What Happens if the Weather Is Bad?
Green River Adventures trips generally operate in varying weather conditions. Passing summer thunderstorms do not automatically cancel the trip. The company may delay or postpone an experience when necessary to avoid storms.
Trips are canceled when Green River Adventures determines that weather or water conditions are dangerous. If Green River Adventures cancels the trip, the current policy provides a full refund. Check the weather before leaving and dress for the expected conditions.
Want a Full-Day Big Bradley Experience?

For guests who want a longer outing, the Big Bradley Rappel + Waterfall Trek Full-Day Combo combines the Big Bradley descent with a longer wilderness experience.
The current combo includes:
- 8 hours total
- 4.5 miles of hiking
- Big Bradley Waterfall Rappel
- Waterfall Trek
- Picnic lunch from The Purple Onion Cafe
- Ages 15+
- Weight range of 90–275 pounds
- Reservations required
After the morning rappel and lunch, the Waterfall Trek continues through Cove Creek Gorge. Depending on the route and conditions, obstacles and activities can include waterfall jumps, rope-assisted passages, rock slides, log crossings, old-growth forest, and wildlife.
The full-day combination is a much larger physical commitment than the standard Big Bradley trip.
Choose the standard four-hour rappel if Big Bradley itself is your main goal. Consider the full-day combination when your group is prepared for an eight-hour active wilderness experience.
