Green River Tubing in NC: 7 Essential Tips for a Great Trip
September 30, 2026

Green River tubing in NC is a self-guided river experience on the Lower Green River near Saluda. Green River Adventures offers 3-mile and 4.5-mile tubing options, with occasional Class II rapids along the river.
We provide the tube, lifejacket, shuttle transportation, and river logistics. Once on the water, participants are responsible for managing their tube, following river guidance, and making safe decisions.
Current tubing prices start at $20 for ages 5+. Single tubes are recommended for ages 10 and older, while double tubes can be used by a child age 5+ with an adult. If you are planning a tubing day on the Lower Green, these are the details you should know before arriving.
1. Choose the Tubing Route That Fits Your Group
Green River Adventures currently offers two Lower Green River tubing distances.
3-Mile Route
Allow approximately:
- 2 hours on the river
- 2.5–3 hours total
4.5-Mile Route
Allow approximately:
- 3 hours on the river
- 3.5–4 hours total
The Lower Green is a recreational Class II river, but moving water and rapids can feel very different depending on a guest’s age, experience, and comfort level. For families with younger children or groups that want the more mellow option, consider the shorter tubing experience.
If your group includes small children or anyone unsure about Class II rapids, contact our team before choosing your route. Check current distances, launch times, pricing, and availability on the Lower Green River Tubing page before planning your trip.
2. Choose the Right Tube for Your Group

We use Rocky Mountain Rafts tubing equipment in Standard, Ergonomic, and Double models. Single tubes are recommended for guests 10 and older. Double tubes can be a better fit for:
- An adult tubing with a child age 5+
- Someone who needs assistance
- Two smaller adults
- A guest bringing a pet
The tubes have bottoms rather than open centers. Ergonomic models also have a higher back for additional support and a more upright seating position.
Double tubes should be reserved in advance when possible.
Is Tubing Suitable for First-Timers?
No specific paddling experience is listed as a requirement for tubing. However, the trip is self-guided, and participants are responsible for their own safety and expected to use good judgment on the river. You should be comfortable being on moving water and understand that the Lower Green includes occasional Class II rapids.
If you would rather have more control over your direction and take a more active approach to the river, compare tubing with the Lower Green River Inflatable Kayak Adventure.
3. Know the Cost and What Is Included
Current Lower Green River tubing rates start at $20 for ages 5+. Group rates begin at eight participants.
Green River Adventures provides:
- Your tube
- Lifejacket
- Shuttle transportation
- River logistics
- Check-in and river orientation
Lifejackets are provided for all tubing guests and should be worn throughout the river trip. Reservations are recommended if you want a specific launch time. Walk-ins may be accommodated when space is available.
If your preferred time does not appear online, call the Riverside Outpost. Additional availability may sometimes be available by phone. For the latest pricing and booking options, use the Lower Green River Tubing trip page.
4. Wear Footwear That Will Stay on in Moving Water
Tubing requires secure footwear that will stay on your feet in moving water. The tubing trip guidance lists suitable options such as:
- Heel-strap sandals
- Water shoes
- River booties
- Old sneakers
Avoid footwear that can easily slip off in the current.
Following Hurricane Helene, Green River Adventures also recommends closed-toe footwear for additional protection from potential river debris.
That recommendation reflects changes to the Lower Green River corridor after the storm. You can read more about the river’s recovery and current conditions in our Hurricane Helene and Saluda Wildfires FAQ.
Wear clothes that can get completely wet.
Also bring:
- Sunscreen
- A sunglasses retainer
- Drinking water
- Necessary medication
- Dry storage for essentials
- Dry clothes for afterward
Phones, wallets, and other valuables are better left secured in your vehicle. Car keys can be left at the front desk.
Follow Basic River Safety Rules
Wear your lifejacket throughout the float. Do not attach yourself or your tube to another object with rope, string, or other loose material. These can create an entanglement hazard in moving water. Alcohol is prohibited on the Green River.
5. Arrive 15 Minutes Early and Complete Your Waiver
Tubing trips meet at the Green River Adventures Riverside Outpost, 5476 Green River Cove Road, Saluda, NC 28773. Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled launch.
This gives you time for:
- Parking
- Check-in
- Waivers
- Changing
- River orientation
Every participant must complete a Participant Agreement Form. Guests under 18 need a parent or guardian signature, and children under 13 must have active adult supervision. Late arrivals are not entitled to a refund. If space is available, our team may try to move you to another same-day trip, but another departure cannot be guaranteed.
You can review the latest waiver, arrival, cancellation, and participant requirements on the Green River Adventures Policies page.
Current tubing launches operate between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., with the final three-hour launch at 2:30 p.m.
2026 Tubing Season
For the 2026 season, Green River Adventures currently lists tubing and river trips as starting May 23.
Seasonal operating days are:
- June and July: seven days a week
- May, August, and September: Thursday through Monday during scheduled operating periods
- October through April: river programs closed
Because seasonal dates can change, confirm the current calendar before making travel plans.
6. Understand How the Lower Green River Has Changed
Hurricane Helene significantly changed parts of the Green River corridor in September 2024. Floodwaters widened sections of the river corridor, exposed more bedrock, and deposited large areas of river sand.
The Lower Green remains a Class II recreational river, but parts of the setting and riverbank now look different from before the storm. One of the most important changes occurred upstream when a landslide destroyed the Tuxedo Hydro Station.
Without controlled releases from the hydro station, the Green River is now flowing naturally for the first time in roughly a century. That means water levels can vary more with rainfall. For tubing guests, this matters because the same route can feel different depending on recent weather and river level.
The current tubing information notes that river levels vary daily and are rain dependent. If conditions are important to your group, contact Green River Adventures before arriving for the latest local information.
What About River Cleanup and Water Quality?
After Hurricane Helene, FEMA and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers carried out large-scale debris removal. Additional cleanup work was led by Green Riverkeeper with support from MountainTrue.
River professionals also inspected rapids during the reopening process, while MountainTrue conducted water-quality testing. For more context on what changed locally and how the river reopened, see our post-Helene Green River update.
The river remains a natural environment, so conditions can continue to change. Green River Adventures monitors weather and river conditions before trips.
7. Understand Weather and Cancellation Rules Before Booking
Green River Adventures river trips generally operate in changing weather. Passing summer thunderstorms do not automatically cancel tubing. Trips may be delayed or postponed when conditions require it, and Green River Adventures can cancel when weather or water levels are considered unsafe.
If Green River Adventures cancels your trip, the current policy provides a full refund. For guest cancellations, reservations are charged in full at booking. To cancel or modify a reservation, you currently need to give at least 72 hours, or three days, notice.
Inside that 72-hour period:
- Reservations are considered final.
- Cancellations are not eligible for refunds.
- Reservations cannot be rescheduled.
Review the current Green River Adventures cancellation and participant policies before reserving, especially when booking for a larger group. Check the weather before leaving for Saluda, but do not assume normal rain means your tubing trip has been canceled.
Before You Leave for the Lower Green
Use this checklist before your tubing trip:
- Confirm whether the 3-mile or 4.5-mile route fits your group.
- Reserve a double tube if a child or assisted guest needs one.
- Complete the required participant waivers.
- Wear footwear that will stay secured in moving water.
- Consider closed-toe footwear for additional post-Helene protection.
- Bring water, sunscreen, and any required medication.
- Leave valuables secured or use dry storage.
- Check the day’s weather and river conditions.
- Arrive at the Riverside Outpost at least 15 minutes early.
- Review the 72-hour cancellation policy before booking.
Plan for Current River Conditions
The Lower Green is now a naturally flowing mountain river, so water level and pace can vary with rainfall.
Before your trip, focus on the details that directly affect your experience: choose the right route and tube, wear secure footwear, understand the Class II water, check current river conditions, and arrive on time.
Before leaving for Saluda, check the current Lower Green River Tubing page for pricing, launch availability, operating dates, and river information.
I kept the linking concentrated around decision points rather than linking every mention of the brand. The primary tubing page now supports booking and route decisions, the inflatable kayak page captures readers wanting a more active option, while the Helene FAQ and policies pages provide deeper evidence for river-condition and operating-rule claims.
